In 1937, Ettore Anselmi bought his first hectare outside the town of Pocenia in the heart of sunny Friuli. The gravel and sandy soils here proved to be a good home for the local variety Pinot Grigio.  In 1960 he planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and began to learn about the nature of these grapes grown in the poor, mineral soil.  Today brothers Giuseppe and Luigi Anselmi continue the family estate.  They both have studied enology at schools in Trentino, and have traveled to the Veneto and Tuscany to visit other respected wineries to learn new techniques and ideas.  The local success of their wines has grown the estate to 80 hectares of vineyards.

Stylistically, the estate focuses on varietal character and terrior.  Each wine is produced with moderate yields, and macerations are held to 15 days for the reds.  New oak is not employed here at all; historically the family likes fruit-driven wines that allow the soils to speak. The wine is balanced with ripe acidity and tannins.

The central plains of Friuli have not had an illustrious wine history, since over-cropping growers and COOP production are the norm here. However, the Anselmi family has slowly learned that lower yields, fully ripened fruit, and better wine- making techniques produce good quality, fruit-filled wines that bring respect to the region of Friuli.
