The Amber Knolls Vineyard is situated in the Red Hills Appellation of Northern California. Andy Beckstoffer bought and planted the vineyard in the late 1990's with the thought that the site would produce some of the world's finest winemaking grapes.

The Red Hills Appellation resides in an area where pyroclastic flows from Cobb Mountain , an active volcano at the time, flowed down towards Clear Lake in an eruption that occurred some one million years ago. The rich, red volcanic soils are well suited to growing high quality grapes and are totally unique to the Red Hills area.
