Made from 100% Tempranillo, the Protocolo Tinto, from relatively high elevation (2,700 feet) vineyards planted on both limestone and clay, reminds me of a tasty, straightforward French Cotes du Rhone. Notions of roasted herbs, pepper, and black cherries jump from the glass of this medium-bodied, straightforward, satisfying, well-made, dry red.

The grapes come from vineyards that are 2,700 ft. in elevation with calcareous clay soils. They are oriented to the southwest, and planted in the traditional vaso and cabeza systems; yields: 6,100 kg/ha (2.74 t/acre).

Harvested October 2003. The wine undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation and aged for 3 months in 1-3-year-old American oak barrels.
