Vespa Rosso the Bastianich estate red (Merlot, Refosco and Cabernet Sauv. & Cabernet Franc) which balances power and finesse through a stylized combination of indigenous and international varieties, limited yields and careful farming yield a wine with ripe fruit and earthy tones on the nose, with a lush palate supported by a firm acidic and tannic structure. It’s a wine that can be consumed immediately on release, although it is structured enough for aging. A “Vespa” is a wasp in Italian.

Vespa Rosso is uncommonly fruit-forward and structured for a “cold weather” red wine, and yet it retains many of the spicy, earthy notes that characterize Friulian reds. The extra effort made in both the vineyard (sharply reducing yields) and the cellar (small batch fermentation in tonneaux) helps elevate Vespa Rosso beyond the ranks of everyday reds.

A vertical wood press is used which releases gentle fruit extraction and softer tannins since there is less skin against skin contact friction with this type of press. The wine is crafted by macerating and fermenting the different varieties individually in new, opentopped, 500-liter tonneaux barrels. Those same tonneaux are reassembled and used to age the wines, along with new and used Allier barriques. After barrel aging of 18 months, the blend is created and the assemblage then receives another 1 years of bottle aging before release.
