L'Avion is one of the few Roussanne based wines produced in all of California . There is very little Roussanne grown in Santa Barbara County or in the rest of California . It is a grape variety most widely planted in the Rhone Valley of France, though even there, Marsanne is the predominant white varietal. Chateau Beaucastel's 'Cuvee Vielle Vignes' is undeniably the greatest Roussanne in the world, and a wine that we draw inspiration from.

A 100% pure Roussanne produced from 70-year-old vines, it is a wine of great complexity and richness. With a finished natural alcohol of barely 14% the L'Avion shows incredibly layered richness in the mouth and aromas of honeysuckle and sweet fruit in the nose.

Readers should not overlook the white wine made by Sashi Moorman called L’Avion. Made from 100% Roussanne, the 2007 L’Avion is terrific. A full-bodied, dry white offering copious quantities of honeysuckle, and a hint of that petroleum/terroir-like character that one finds in a late harvest wine from Alsace. However, this is a dry, beautifully rich, layered, perfumed white that represents an excellent example of what can be achieved in California’s Central Coast with top-notch whites.
